Overview: Assessments

Week 7

Assessments help instructional designers and other professionals in the K-12 education system evaluate whether professionals or students are learning the necessary skills or material and identify gaps to determine how to close them. Instructional Design assessments could also be a valuable tool to determine if the instructional product achieves its intended purposes and confirm client satisfaction.

Formative Assessment: The primary goal of formative assessments is to provide students or professionals with feedback that guides them to reflect on their learning and identify areas that require further attention or clarification. These ongoing assessments not only evaluate progress but also adjust learning strategies, fostering a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

These assessments "Sum up" the learning at the end of a period (year or semester).

Authentic Assessment: Authentic assessments are all about real-world context and the skills one uses to solve real-world problems. They measure how you brainstorm solutions and which strategies, approaches, or skills you use to solve problems you would encounter in daily life, personally or professionally. Based on the scenario presented, the outcome depends on one's unique experiences and points of view. Also, rubrics are used to evaluate the learner's performance based on clear criteria, so students know exactly what the evaluator is looking to observe from them or problem-solving and critical thinking skills to display while solving or finding solutions to a situation or scenario.
